My friend called me up today to help him with a problem. A friend of his has a young cat that was rescued from a culvert/drain near the river in Minot, ND. (In case some of you don't know, much of Minot, ND is underwater.) His friend is pregnant and is going to her family in Grand Rapids, MN, but can't take the cat with her. There is another friend in Fargo, ND who will take the cat in permanently. My friend's dad is deathly allergic to cats so she can't stay there so I was asked to take in "Salem". This is actually a very bad idea. My house is NOT kitty proofed and I am doing remodeling in the basement. However, poor Salem has nowhere else to go. She at least seems to grasp the litter box. We tried this jerry rigged enclosure that you see in the photo, but she got out of that in 30 seconds so we have to cover the drawer with a piece of cardboard and my spool/coffee table. Poor girl was meowing, making me feel so guilty for closing her up in the drawer, but I have no choice. She will get out otherwise and get herself hurt. I'll have to find a large high-sided box at work tomorrow that I can bring home and put her in. Off to bed now. Please stay in the box little Salem. I do not want anything happening to you.

What a little cutie! I'm glad that she was able to get rescued! Also, have you been trying to find ways to make your home more "kitty friendly"? What's around your house that makes it that way? Maybe you can try blocking and/or removing anything that may pose a potential hazard for her, so that she can have more free reign of your house. On a final note, good luck with her! Give her the love and comfort that she needs right now!

This was written last night, but apparently I didn't hit submit. ------------------------------------------------------------------- I have found that she is very well behaved. I went downstairs to do some caulking and let her out this morning and found that she is indeed litter box ready. As time passed I saw that she was not getting up onto anything. In fact, she seemed to avoid climbing up on anything. After observing her as I work I figure I will take a chance and let her have the basement.
Long story short, she is now trusted in the whole house and is now sound asleep in my left arm as I type this. I want to go to bed, but don't want to wake her up. HELP!!!

Yay!!! Kitty rules the house now! ;D You might as well be chained to the chair when that happens. It's SO awkward to remove a snoozing kitty from your lap.
